Begin with the purpose
- What is the goal for my care, and how would we tell whether the plan helped?
- Why this medicine for my situation?
- What other options can we discuss, including waiting?
- What part of the evidence remains uncertain?
Ask for an explanation without shorthand. If a term is unfamiliar, ask the clinician to explain it before moving on. Write the answer in your own words and read it back.
Then follow the prescription
FDA notes that people obtaining compounded medicine online may not know which compounder actually produced it. Getting that name makes the pharmacy record check possible.
- Who is making the decision to prescribe?
- What is the exact medicine and preparation?
- Name the pharmacy preparing it; is another pharmacy handling delivery?
- Who explains the label and answers a question about it?
Finish with the next contact and the bill
- When will the plan be reviewed?
- How do I contact the clinician between visits?
- Which charges does this fee cover, and which are separate?
- What happens to charges if treatment is not prescribed or is stopped?
Leave room beside each question for the answer. Keep an unanswered item open on the page. Ask for anything still unclear in writing before making a commitment.
